Gearrchoille Community Wood Ardgay  AGM 2009

The GCWA’s fifth AGM took place at the end of May.  The interesting illustrated talk given by Steve Robertson, of North Highland Forest Trust, was well received by those present in Kincardine Old Church.  This venue was chosen for the AGM specifically because it is so well equipped for audio visual presentations

Because of the GCWA’s governing documents it was necessary for the last founding director, Betty Wright, to resign.  She was warmly thanked for all her hard work over the last five years, not least, for the production of the new leaflet, launched at this meeting, which is a very informative guide to some of the trees found in the woodland. It is hoped that this will soon be on sale locally, any profit going back directly into caring for the wood. Ms Wright kindly agreed to continue as Membership secretary.  One new director, Mr David Hannah, was appointed, whilst Bill Stobo, George Ross and Brigitte Geddes were re-appointed. Mairi Munro and Rhonwen Copley both continue their directorships.

The meeting saw the launch of the GCWA’s 2010 Calendar.  Generous sponsorship from Bonar Bridge Post Office; Ardgay Game Factory and Environmental Forestry Services, Ardgay, means this year’s calendar will retail at £3.50 which is £1 less than last year.  It was noted, and appreciated, that the high level of last year’s calendar sales could not have been achieved without the kind cooperation of local retailers. It is hoped that this year’s price reduction will help to build on that foundation.

It was reported that since last May the directors have been concentrating on the planned path improvements, and contending with the statutory requirements entailed in the creation of the wildlife pond within the wood.  The pond may not be as visible as the paths this year, but progress is being made.

Members were gently reminded that their annual subscriptions are now due. It was pleasing to note in the 2008/09 accounts that although the membership fees have never been increased in the last five years, there was an increase in the amount of membership subscription received last year. It is hoped that even more people will decide to spend £2 supporting their community wood this year.
